At the last meeting, on Oct. 29, 2009, the members of the Innovators Club voted in the following people to the corresponding offices:

Evan Boldt then appointed Sebastian Szustkowski as the Secretary. They will take these positions effective Nov. 12, 2009.

It was also passed, by vote, that the following attached Bylaws and Constitution be adopted. This is our first Bylaws, and our first set of revisions to the Constitution.

I appointed the following officers:

Vice Secretary & Intellectual Property Manager: David Boveri

Information Technology Manager: Evan Boldt

Information Technology Deputy: Lucas Kedzierski

Public Relations Manager: Timothy Smith

Sergent At Arms: Christopher Smith

In other business, we decided to pursue making the various different kinds of door stops to sell, pursue having a booth or station at the Huskie Bash in the fall. At the booth, we can have a raffle selling shirts, bottle openers, gift cards, and a few more expensive items, e.g. ipods. We can also give out coupons for local restaurants that we get a cut from.

Tony and I are also going to pursue mailling various alumni and business leaders requests for sponsorship.

Nonprofits are a necessary part of governments’ functionality, so they get lots of funding.
Build credibility as an organization. Make sure that you are doing what you need to do.
 
Patents: Mike Baima (mbaima@reinhartlaw.com) – no “pro-bono” work
Important for monetary gain

Patentable – New, Not obvious, Usable
Very nuanced field – not recommended that you attempt to get a patent by yourself
When contacting a patent agent/attourney, give them as much information as possible. Cite prior art. Alternative embodiments, show what your invention is, and why it is different
Market cost: 15-20k
Patent/Prior-art search: $700 – $1500 - good indicator for patentability, helps drafter to make a
Patent agent/attorney cannot capitalize on any ideas because of duty of confidentiality.
Title 35 – Publicly disclose – can haunt. Avoid non-confidential disclosures.

Summary: Starting a business can be difficult against large businesses.

Many small businesses never turn a profit because the go out of business first. They tend to go out of business before they start making money. Businesses can take a long time to get ‘off the ground’.
Evaluate company’s credibility, need in the market place, product strength (unique and not duplicate-able).
Books: “Think and grow rich” Napoleon Hill – 500 most successful people in America. 13 important things. “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson. “21 irrefutable laws of leadership” – red book… can’t see author
